Fitness

We all have different perceptions of what fitness means to us. My personal favorite was Frank Zane in his prime. Other bodybuilders were struggling to get larger and Frank took a different road and refined his body to look like he was huge.

Frank was only 5’9″ and competed around 180lbs. Even at that size he beat Arnold Schwarzenegger, only one of three to hold that claim.

If you are a baby-boomer you may think being able to climb a flight of stairs without running out of breath is fit. This is particularly true if you are overweight or obese. You do not have to want to look like a bodybuilder or fitness pro to start exercising.

Think of why you would like to be fit. Playing tennis with buddies, golfing, hiking or just taking a long stroll on the beach with your lovely wife.

Your heart (which is a muscle) and your muscles suffer atrophy if they are not worked. They shrink in size and become less efficient. Believe me, you do not want your heart to work anything but optimally.

Regardless of how you define fitness, take the time to define it for yourself and strive towards that goal. You will do wonders for your self-esteem and health; and who knows, you may become an inspiration and role model for your children and grandchildren.
